COASTAL PRESERVATION NETWORK\u00a0<\/strong>is dedicated to preserving, protecting, and restoring the shoreline and environment of Northeast Queens and Long Island and thereby safeguarding the health of residents who live here. We work to find and report shoreline polluters, preserve and clean our valuable local greenspaces,\u00a0 divert organic waste and increase composting,\u00a0 replenish oysters and replant wetlands, expand public access to the waterfront, and fight careless overdevelopment along our coast.<\/p>\n

In Queens, we work to improve the coastline of College Point, with emphasis on MacNeil Park and Powell's Cove Park, two magnificent East River parks, and a long-neglected stretch of Flushing Bay waterfront that we christened \"Big Rock Beach.\" We are working with Billion Oyster Project to restore oyster habitat in Powell's Cove, and with the NYC Parks Department to remove abandoned vessels and large debris from College Point's coast.<\/p>\n

In Long Island, our newest area of focus, we are launching a pilot program for residential food scrap diversion and community composting in the village of Upper Brookville, located in the town of Oyster Bay.\u00a0 Most of Long Island does not offer community composting or food scrap diversion, even though this material accounts for\u00a0 estimated 1\/3 of all waste. Ours is among the grassroots efforts to change that and catch up to NYC , which has a five-borough curbside food scrap collection system. (We launched and operated a food scrap dropoff program at a College Point park with city partners for nearly a year).<\/p>\n

Through environmental workshops, shoreline cleanups, seagrass and oyster plantings, research, parks advocacy, educational presentations and partnerships, Coastal is creating more vibrant waterfronts and parks, restoring public access to the coastline, building environmental knowledge, protecting our natural resources, and strengthening community service and pride. CPN is an\u00a0all-volunteer 501c3 organization established in 2002.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
